Aleshin Graph

The Aleshin graph at level n is the undirected multigraph on the 2^n binary words of length n obtained by joining each word w to a(w), b(w), and c(w) and retaining all labels and edge multiplicities. The permutations are defined recursively, for x in {0,1}, by a(0w)=1c(w), a(1w)=0b(w), b(0w)=1b(w), b(1w)=0c(w), and c(xw)=xa(w), with all three fixing the empty word (Kharlampovich and Vdovina 2026). The undirected convention uses the generating list a,b,c,a^(-1),b^(-1),c^(-1) and has degree six, counting a graph loop twice.

Kharlampovich and Vdovina (2026) report a two-sided normalized spectral gap of at least 1-2sqrt(2)/3, an undirected graph diameter at most 2n+2, and a directed diameter at most 12n. Thus these diameters have order Theta(n), where Theta is big-Theta notation. They also report that the undirected graphs are not Ramanujan for n>=10. These claims use a recent Bellaterra graph result and require further independent verification. Kharlampovich and Vdovina (2026) credit ChatGPT with assistance in the non-Ramanujan proof.
