A New Kind of Science Lecture Tour Under Way

October 23, 2002--Following the release of his popular and groundbreaking book A New Kind of Science (see MathWorld headline news story of May 14, 2002) and several high-profile interviews in such places as The New York Times and The Charlie Rose Show, noted scientist and Mathematica creator Stephen Wolfram has embarked on a national speaking tour to describe and expound on the ideas and discoveries in his book.

Wolfram has already spoken to enthusiastic audiences in packed auditoriums at national research centers such as NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Argonne National Laboratory as well as on the campuses of many prestigious universities, including the University of Maryland, Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois, and Brown University.

Many additional venues are currently scheduled, and more are planned. Most events will be approximately two hours in length, with a lecture of about 80 minutes followed by a question-and-answer session with Wolfram.

Additional information about A New Kind of Science is available from the book's website. It is now also possible to experiment interactively with many of the concepts discussed in the book using A New Kind of Science Explorer, a stand-alone software package powered by Mathematica technology that runs under Windows and Mac OS Classic. Mac OS X and other Unix versions are expected to be available soon.

Details about Wolfram's lecture tour can be found on the website at www.wolframscience.com/appearances/.
