2002 MathML Conference Upcoming This June

By Eric W. Weisstein

May 28, 2002--The second MathML International Conference will be held June 28-30, 2002, at the Hickory Ridge Marriott Conference Hotel in Lisle, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The resort-like setting of the conference center was chosen to help enhance the ample opportunities for interaction among attendees. The conference is sponsored by Wolfram Research, Waterloo Maple, Design Science, the American Mathematical Society (AMS), and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Modeled on the successful first MathML conference in October 2000, the conference brings together those interested or involved in the future of math on the web and also provides a forum for presenting and discussing current research and applications, emphasizing mathematics on the web in general and MathML in particular.

The final program is now set and includes many interesting presentations, posters, and software demonstrations. Also scheduled are invited talks by Leslie Lamport, the creator of LaTeX; David Carlisle, an editor of the MathML 2 Recommendation; and Roger Sidje, the principal implementer of MathML in Mozilla.

New this year is a "demo" night, featuring demonstrations of some of the leading MathML applications. As is befitting a web-oriented conference, a large email lab and a wireless network with a high-speed connection will be available for those attending.

Three preconference tutorials are also being offered on Friday, June 28, for those wishing a more in-depth knowledge of OpenMath and of introductory and advanced uses of MathML. Space is limited for these hands-on tutorials, so early registration is strongly recommended.

Conference registration is currently being accepted at www.wolfram.com/mathmlconference/register.cgi.

More information about the conference, including the full schedule of events and presentation abstracts, is available on the MathML conference website at www.mathmlconference.org.
