Kummer Extension

A Kummer extension of a field K containing the nth roots of unity, where n is a positive integer not divisible by the characteristic of K, is a field extension obtained by adjoining one or more nth roots of elements of K. In the simple case it has the form

 L=K(alpha), alpha^n=a in K.

Finite Abelian extensions whose Galois groups have exponent dividing n arise in this way, and their subgroups can be described using classes in K^*/(K^*)^n.
