Cartan Subgroup

A Cartan subgroup of a reductive Lie group G is the full centralizer in G of a Cartan subalgebra h of its Lie algebra. Explicitly, it consists of all g in G such that Ad(g)X=X for every X in h, where Ad is the adjoint representation. It need not be connected (Knapp 2002, p. 487). For a connected complex reductive algebraic group, Cartan subgroups are maximal tori in the algebraic-group sense, isomorphic to (C^*)^r, and are conjugate. Here C^* denotes the nonzero complex numbers under multiplication.
