Lightlike

A lightlike four-vector a_mu is one whose four-vector norm has square a_mua^mu=0.

The square of the four-vector norm is the self-pairing of a four-vector under the more general Lorentzian inner product <·,·> on n-dimensional Lorentzian space with n>=2 and metric signature (1,n-1) in the negative-first convention. In this more general environment, the Lorentzian inner product of two vectors x=(x_0,x_1,...,x_(n-1)) and y=(y_0,y_1,...,y_(n-1)) has the form

 <x,y>=-x_0y_0+x_1y_1+...+x_(n-1)y_(n-1),

whereby one defines a vector a to be lightlike precisely when <a,a>=0.

Lightlike vectors are sometimes called null vectors. The collection of all lightlike vectors in a Lorentzian space (e.g., in the Minkowski space of special relativity) is known as the light cone. One often distinguishes positive lightlike vectors from negative lightlike vectors.
