Volume Form

A volume form on an n-dimensional smooth manifold is a nowhere-vanishing differential form of degree n. A manifold admits a volume form iff it is orientable, and choosing a volume form determines a manifold orientation.

On an oriented Riemannian manifold with local coordinates x^1,...,x^n and metric matrix (g_(ij)), the Riemannian volume form is

 dV_g=sqrt(det(g_(ij)))dx^1 ^ ... ^ dx^n.

It provides the coordinate-independent measure used to integrate scalar functions over the manifold.
